Sure the earlier versions, back to 2003 at least, work. They lack the newer features developed after your version, but they do include the same security updates (virus info, etc.).
That said, I recommend switching from norton to MS One Care Live. I've used both, and have found the MS product to be superior.

Sure.... if you even want to use Norton in the first place! Norton is a lousy security system. It regulates everything on your computer, gives you no freedom, uses too many resources, and doesn't even protect you from serious viruses. You can obviously tell that I am not a fan of Norton, because every computer that I've fixed for people that complain that too many resources are being used, always have had Norton, and by removing Norton and putting on AVG, have made their computer run significantly faster. AVG is free, and updates all the time, and protects you in a language almost anyone can understand by telling you "Hey, you have a virus. Would you like to get rid of it?". I love AVG and I recommend it to everyone.

Yes but it won't protect you completely unless you update your virus definitions. That has a cost attached and is usually a subscription. You can also run a virus scan off the Symantec site for free but that doesn't protect your computer. It only tells you if you have a virus.
