Does Microsoft make their software people work over 40 hours a week like most companies now? They have some pretty great benefits, but does that come with 80 hour work weeks? Anyone know?

The harsh reality is that pretty much all software development jobs expect the engineers to put in ridiculous hours. It just comes with the territory.

This isn't so bad when you are a 20 something engineer without a family, However, it really sucks when you become a 40 something engineer and suddenly realize that your 20 years of industry experience really counts for little because technology moves forward fast enough that those fresh out of school 20 something engineers have fresh knowledge of all the latest stuff, can do 80% of your job, are willing to do it for half the money and have no problems working 80 hour weeks and relocating to timbucktoo at the drop of a hat.

I don't know if they over work them but have you ever been on an ideal and it start coming together and then you have to clock out? well by the next day it could be all gone so lets say a team is working on something and they decide to go for it if it makes a lot of money for them and MS do you really think they feel overworked? some people feel overworked when they have to go to work for 40 hours and have to do something, besides just getting their paycheck, your questions needs more clarity to really get a good answer. May be thats why you have to hit CTRL-alt deleTE all the time every time they had a proble the had to stop and start the next day and forgot where they left off? (Grin) they have teams that work together to do software I dout they are to over worked,
