Work out with them. Get them pumped up to loose weight. Encourage them to do it. Just don't call them FAT.

To generally lose fat, you have to do cardio exercises, which are the "full body workout" stuff like jogging, aerobics and swimming. These exercises don't really build muscles very much. But they are good fat burners. You have to do things like weight-lifting to build your muscles.

Just a little warning... for ladies, it is not going to be easy to slim down the calves and thighs. Coz it's one of the last places the body takes fat from when you exercises. :( BUT it's not impossible! Just need a little bit more perseverence and patience. ;)

And remember, exercise has to come hand-in-hand with the right diet. A good diet is NOT starving oneself. Each meal should be a balanced diet, with the right amount of carbo, protein, fats and vitamins and minerals. And the amount should be fitting with the type of activities you do. A visit to a dietician can help you estimate the amount of daily calories you need, if you are really serious about this.

all the help, encouragement, badgering, comforting, listening, information, won't do a thing until they are ready to make a change in their life style. Assist them in finding a pleasurable physical activity and do it often.

Energy is economics. energy surplus, weight gained (not necessarily always bad), energy deficit, weight lost, (not always good)

Okay....3,500 calories to burn one pound of fat
You keep a journal of your food intake..I think its highly important for you to see on paper the numbers of what you are taking in.

You buy a calorie counting watch..You take your total intake calories +3,500 add them together and THAT is what you need to burn everyday..to burn one pound.

If you start seeing the numbers I think it will help see that alot of what you might eat..may be uneccesary. You have to remember that your stomach and your intake of food at one meal sitting should be the size of your fist. It doesn't take much food to maintain your health. You can have 5 to 6 servings of healthy food the size of your fits over three regular huge meals. Your body is like a conveyer belt. You need a little at a time to keep everything moving. Good Luck

as you're their friends and not their trainer, i'd suggest being really supportive of them in any diet and exercise program they take on.
encourage them to move more and eat less (basic tenet of any diet program)
encourage healthy eating by only having healthy foods, drinks and snacks when you spend time with them
do more active things with them, eg walks, bike rides, horseriding, swimming, dance classes

say you wanna do those things and ask them to join you....

give compliments when you see they've lost weight
