I am the proud owner of a 9 yr old miniature wire-haired dachshund. His name is Al. Dachshunds are wonderful pets, but they need special consideration. For example, Al's legs are only about 5 inches long, so he has lots of difficulty going up stairs or anything over 6 inches. He has some back difficulties in his old age because of his elongated spine which make him so cute. He gets cold easily, so he either sleeps under the covers or in front of the heater --- and has to be coerced to go outside to go to the bathroom in the winter. The other problem with the breed (like many pedigreed dogs) is inbreeding. Al has a genetic abnormality which made him go blind. My vet tells me that this is not too common, but not completely unexpected. Just wanted to give you the downsides for consideration. Please don't misunderstand. Al is a wonderful, loyal companion with a very sweet disposition. He loves his pet cat and doesn't eat much. If you can handle the peculiarities, then a dachshund is a good choice!
