Catholics are not supposed to use any contraception. Up until the 1930's Protestant religions held the same view. All Christians were not to use contraception.
The views of the Protestant religions changed, but the Catholic church has stood fast in it's teaching on the subject. Many Catholics use contraception, when they do they are going against the teaching of the church and they should not be receiving Eucharist.
The reasons the Church gives for begin against contraception are many, for starters here are some scripture references: http://www.scripturecatholic.com/contraception.html
We are not supposed to prevent life by artificial means. Each family is to allow God to decide. Life is precisous and begins at conception.
There are big issues with the pill...if you read the literature that comes with it, there is a good possibility that some months you will be pregnant but because you're on the pill the uterus will be unable to accept the implantation of the fetus. Thus, it effects an abortion. The church could never back something that is abortive, ever!
But even so, it's very difficult to put it all in yahoo.answers. The church fathers have great insight into scripture and theology...their reasons are deep and make a lot of sense when you have all the information they have.
Read Humanae Vitae. It's beautifully written and when you understand where the teaching comes from, it's so amazing and so loving...

Some types of contraception are better than others. Some types are allowed for true believers. (The morning after pill is discouraged) If you understand fertile mucus, what more do you need? My proof is that Scripture does not condemn it.

I believe that only the Roman Catholics forbid artificial birth control.
Protestants note that the Bible seems to say nothing on the subject (other than one obscure passage in Genesis that can be interpreted in many different ways), so they do not take a stand one way or the other.
I am not sure about Eastern Orthodox.

Yes it is allowed. Because God gave us intellect to work out the natural laws and gave us free will to choose our destinies, we can and do practice natural contraception.

The issue of contraception is NOT addressed in the Bible. Thus it is a matter of Christian liberty.
