Depends. Prayer is communication. With a sentient Being. If you approach it as a scientific experiment or just as a party game, no. Would you respond to people pretending to talk to you? But if you wish to develop a real relationship with a living Person, prayer can be a very powerful experience and tool.
It's up to you.

Have you ever asked yourself what prayer is? Prayer is simply talking to God—and the most important thing I can say about this is that God wants you to talk to Him! He loves us and He has promised to hear us when we pray. How can you learn to pray? First, understand why prayer is possible.
Prayer is possible because Jesus Christ has removed the barrier between us and God—a barrier caused by our sins. You see, sin separates us from God, and because of that we have no right to come before Him. But by His death on the cross, Christ paid the penalty for our sins and removed the barrier. God then gives us the privilege of coming into His presence when we commit our lives to Christ. The Bible says, "Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need" (Hebrews 4:16). If you have never done so, ask Christ to come into your life today.
Then understand that God now welcomes you into His presence and promises to hear you—and He cannot lie. The Bible says, "This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us" (1 John 5:14). Trust His promises and learn to bring every concern to Him in prayer.

Well, I've heard the stories of miracles and other things, and I do believe them. One of the prayers I have had answered was when I was praying to receive the gift of the Holy Ghost (Acts 2:38). I felt the Spirit surround me and I spoke with tongues. That right there was when I found out that prayer works.
Just because God doesn't answer a prayer the way you want him to, it doesn't mean He didn't answer it. God works in mysterious ways. 1 Timothy 3:16 - And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

Work. Adam and Eve prayed for God forgive them, they was the first men which pray, so was born the prayer. In the all Old Testament men prayed and wait for the forgive of God. The forgive of God came in The New Testament through The Sacrifice of Jesus Christ The Son of God, who save us from the slavery of the sins.

[2:46] And seek help with patience and prayer, and this indeed is hard except for the humble in spirit,
[2:187] And when My servants ask thee about Me, say 'I am near. I answer the prayer of the supplicant when he prays to Me. So they should hearken to Me and believe in Me, that they may follow the right way.'

I think there is a trick to prayer. People think often times that pleading with God for 10 minutes a day is the way to affect change in their lives. I submit to you that we send a message to the heavens every minute of every day.
What we dwell upon in our heart and in our mind is what we get - it's as simple as that. So prayer works, it depends upon how you do it and what you pray for. If you dwell upon your problems (lack, lonliness with statements of "I can't afford" or "I hate being so alone") you will get more problems. If you dwell upon the solutions ("I attract money and prosperity into my life everyday" or "I know the person for me is on their way!") then that is what you will get in your life.
Visualization can also be a great way to pray. Sit quietly for a few minutes and try to see a clear picture of yourself with the success you are seeking (relaxing by a pool or with a special someone) and try to feel it - try to imagine yourself there. Try to remember that feeling at different times of the day (while you are driving or showering) and you will be amazed at how quickly you see a difference (I know I was).
Peace!
