The alternative health science "Iridology" addresses this question.
Iridology classifies eye colors into two primary colors: blue and brown.
If you look at a truly brown eye with a magnifying lens, the Iris (the colored part of the eye) will look smooth like a sand dune.
A blue eye shows more visible 'strands'.
Variations of blue, such as green or hazel are believed to be caused by bodily fluids such as gall bladder or liver emanations.
Iridology has been used in countries other than the US as a medical diagnostic tool.
Do a Google search on 'iridology' - some interesting facts should come up.

I love having different eye colors it makes me feel unique don't look at it in a bad way!! I have blue eyes and I hear a lot of people complaining brown eyes all look the same I want blue or green or hazel. Well no that's not true it can have a different shade or even a design (neat). We have different eye colors because of our parents genes you may be caring 1 blue genetic and 1 brown even though you only have one eye color you can have 2 genetics. So your child may have a chance to have blue eyes even though you and your male have brown.

Not sure they "have" to be different but they are because of the pigmentation.
