We just moved in this house-- which is pretty old, and there is one room, without a door- and then a bigger "added on" room (that leads to backyard) but it has a door... anyway, we put him in the smaller room- but... it doesn't have a door. and he has a "big boy" bed, and lately when we lay him down, he just get out of his bed, and comes out. getting a door would be very expensive, because the shape of the door opening is large, and wide, and does not have the normal cut in the corner for the hinges... Anyways, any ideas?? moving out is not an option ... we have this house at a very good deal from family... its only 800 a month, w/ a view of the ocean, it just needs a LOT of work...

give him a reward for say... every 5 nights he stays in the bed all night. make a chart and add sports stickers or something like that for every night that he stays in bed. once he hits 5 or so, take him to cvs (that way you can keep it small) and let him pick out a toy

Do what Super Nanny suggests, it works beautifully, if you follow what she says to the letter.

Do your usual bedtime routine and kiss your son goodnight and leave the room.

For the first 3 times he gets-up gently escort him back to bed and verbally remind him that it is time for bed. Kiss him goodnight and leave.

After the 3rd time of coming out of the room, just escort him back to bed "Without Saying anything" - no exceptions. Tuck him back in and leave the room and continue to do this until he falls asleep (sometimes it can take an hour or more for the first night).

Super Nanny says you must not enter into any conversations, like I'm scared or I'm hungry or I would like to say something - these are the little tricks they use to get you to entertain or occupy them instead of focusing on getting them to sleep.

I have done this with both my children, and I swear by the success of this practice.

The first night is always the longest, but the night following is merely routine and lasts a matter of minutes.

But within days your boy will have learned that when you say it's time for bed, then it is time for bed and he will never give you problems again.

Good Luck!

you can get a baby gate OR with just a little effort you can teach him not to do it. Simply take him back to bed and put him in it without giving him any reward by talking to him. It takes a little time but if YOU are consistant within 2-3 days he will know he simply can't get away with this behavior.

just pick him up and put him back in bed time after time after time after time. After 1-3 nights he will get it. Don't get mad (or show it), just say 'stay in bed' calmly and put him back in. The other thing you can do is go the to hardwood store and get thin strips of wood and staple a screen to it. Make it the size to slide into the door frame. i am making one so my nursery has a sceen to keep cats out of babies room. Cheap and no holes in the wall or door frame
