I had this adult cat for three years now. He was sitting on our front porch when we found him. He is already nudered. Now we have trained him to use kitty litter, but he eats to much [14 pounds] and he likes to go outside at night when its 5 deg. How do I teach him to stay in at night and cut down?

if your cat is eating too much you need to have him checked for worms and deworm him. also as the others suggested, the cat can only eat what you give him so reduce what you give him

ok, an outdoor cat tends to stay an outdoor cat... so the best thing you can do is either get a little kitty door that he can use or keep him in a room where he can't get near the outside door (which isn't likely to go over well).
as for the weight issue, you need to put him on diet food.. Purina's indoor formula is real good about maintaining a healthy weight while also helping with hairballs etc. I have 3 maine coons and until I discovered other health issues related to the breed, I had them on the indoor formula and the boys dropped weight nicely and what little they gained back was healthy. Food makes all the difference though when it comes to weight, that and exercise. just make sure you look for things like labored breathing or panting which can be signs of a heart condition. good luck!

Adult cats are suppose to have 1 cup of cat food per day. 1/2 cup in the morning and 1/2 cup at night. If you want him to stay in at night, don't let him out.

Don't give him that much food to eat. One bowl of dry cat food and 1/2 can of wet cat food per day is fine for a cat of that age and size. He won't starve, no matter how much he convinces you to think he will. To get him to stay inside, whenever he tries to go out, say in a deep, firm voice, "NO." If that doesn't work, spritz him with a water bottle whenever he goes by the door.

Just do not let him out and cut down on the food. It will be difficult at first but you will be able to do it. You are going to have to retrain him. Good luck. Here is a link that may help you.
