It is not likely that you would get enough energy to do the amount of work you want to. Try making steam with your magnifying glass in a shot glass full of water.

It can be made to work, but the main problem is tracking the Sun as it moves across the sky. Sunlight gives you a few hundred watts of power per square metre.

A "heat" engine, I've heard it referred to. I think the practicality boils down to (no pun intended) the size of the lens or mirror that collects the light. You're also hostage to the weather.

i have thought about the same question i think there are alot of things that can be "recycled" into todays world they worked great then and with todays tech who knows where things could go
