I don't like choke collars either. How would someone like it if they were choked? There are some dumb people in this world.

You have to know how to use them or it can hurt the dog. It is never supposed to be used to choke a dog, only as a guide to teach them things. Remember that training a dog could one day save his life!! Chokers are very good training tools in the right hands, they help teach a dog how to walk on a leash, which is very important if you have a large dog. It aids in all kinds of dog training. Just wanted to ad...most people use the chokers in the wrong area. It should not be used in the middle of the throat. Also it has to be the perfect size for the dog. Same with the pinch collars, they are good if used right too.

Me and my bf argue over this alot with our Doberman puppy. I went and talked to a dog trainer about it, and she said that will strong, dominate dogs, a choke collar isnt really "mean" as long as you use it in the right way. She told us to get down near the ground and let them come to it. Then put it on the highest part of their neck(right behind their ears). That is the most tenderest part of their neck. And just gently jerk it to the side if they disobey. It will get them re-focused.

But sith smaller dogs, I really dont think a choker chain is good, because they arent really that strong or that dominate.

And I will NEVER put a prong collar on my dog, those are cruel. They have metal prongs that stick into their neck(like teeth).

they are not cruel if u use them correctly. They are mainly for correction purposes which should be a quick pull and release. It should not be for actually choking the dog. Dogs need to be treated like other dogs and other dogs bite each other as a correction. Thats what the choker its supposed to represent.

As a few people mentioned, choke collars are neither mean or cruel. When used correctly, they are a wonderful training tool.

Someone mentioned harnesses. Harnesses do not work for all dogs and I found the larger the dog, the less it works.

When used correctly, they are neither mean nor cruel. They are for training purposes only and are not for every dog or situation. A quick correction and responsible training is necessary for a well behaved dog. Of course, they should only be used in a training session and can be a very big problem if used improperly.

the choke collars can be dangerous. the pich collars can be a very effective training aid and much less dangerous. if fitted properly there is no way they can choke a dog. i've used them on all 4 of my dogs.
what about the electic shock collars? I don't like them at all. but i did see it used on a very handler agressive dog with great success. and the thing wasn't turned up all the way. i put the collar on myself, and felt the shock, and it wasn't any more than an annoying iritation. which is what it's supposed to be to the dog. still don't like them because most owners don't use them correctly.

It depends on the use of it. Some dog trainers reccomend them under supervision only and they shuold not be used as punishment. I personally think that they are cruel and would never use them on my dogs, but when properly used, they can be helpful for larger dogs. The person above who mentioned the bone in their throat, that is true. If someone pulls too much on a dogs throat, it can cause their trachea, which is their wind pipe. I wouldn't recommend using them, but we can't stop people from using them, so if you use them, use them right.

One day my hubby had to pick up our dog from the vet and didn't have her collar or leash, so the vet put a lease on her that formed a chock collar on her. She is a border collie and needs restraining when at the vets around other dogs, he had to pull up on the leash and nearly killed her right there in their office. The Dr. said they where sorry about what happened but she had a sore throat for days.
Stupid vet [he knew what she is like around other dogs].
so now we keep an extra collar in his car also, just in case this should happen again

They should not be allowed to sell them or use them. There are just so many stupid people in the world.

I think they are too specially in small dogs or non agressive big ones, it is better to use a harness as any type of collar tends to choke the poor dog.Choke chains are useful if the dog is unmanageable or being trained.
