Probation, couple thousand dollar fine, may have his license suspended.

It will probably affect his chances of being a state trooper.

Overnight in jail, $5,000 in fines, possible counseling. If its his first offense the court might take into consideration the situation. Yes, it very well could hurt his ambition to become a state trooper. I'd suggest he get an attorney. The attorney might be able to get the DUI charges expunged or reduced from the persons record, then it might not hurt his chance of becoming a state trooper. If he harmed someone else, then all bets are off, just get an attorney it will be money well spent.

I guess it depends on what state you live in. I am sure that many if not most HWP have some sort of rule about how many years your driving record has to be clean. I know for the professional Fire department here you have to have a clean driving record for 5 years. Then after that, if you are arrested for any reason, and not able to show up for work the following day, you are terminated. If you are arrested for DWI and are convicted (1) if you are on probation for any position you are terminated (2) if you are on probation due to a promotion...you will be bumped back down, and it is at their desecration as to whether or not it is all the way down, or just to the position that you were b4 the promotion. Now I have to say this, if he wanted to be a HWP that bad..then he should have known better....but I guess now he can say lesson learned....Most HWP were military to begin with and do understand things such as this, and I am assuming that in most cases are forgiving....best thing to hope for is that he does not get convicted, and he must be honest on his application when it asked if he has ever received a ticket or been convicted of a crime. It is better to be honest.....because they are going to find out.....The charges should be on his ticket.

That totally sucks! This hapened to my brother, and he was on his way to becoming a fireman, and in training at the time. Well, this was during his FIRST DUI! But, to answer your question, it kinda depends on what state he's in. When it happens in CA, u get thrown in jail for a 24 hr sobering up period, then get released. Nothng happens immediately, except that now, if you don't get a lawyer to plead for ur license, the DMV will automatically take your license away within 5 days. Then he'll get served, have to find a lawyer, if he plans on pleading innocent or to plea bargain. But basically if he blew a BOA of what is over the legal limit, it's hard to plead anything but guilty. After the hearing, the judge will appoint him to classes that he'll have to complete, which will pertain to illlegal substance abuse, and most likely another class that will be conducted by MADD. In the mean time, he'll also have a "bounty" to pay in all sorts of fines. In regards to if it will affect his future; u never can tell, unless u go directly to the sorce and ask them. My brother, as I mentioned was in fireman training, by being a volunteer in the force that he was applying to. Unfortunately, when he CRASHED his truck, he was in the same neighborhood that he was serving, which was a rich, ritzy, area of where we live where the people raise farm animals. He crashed through the field that was owned by a lady that donated/supported the fire dept. directly, with a butt load of money each month. He crashed thru her llama field!!! There was a pregnant one in the field and she freaked out saying that if that llama was traumatized that he was going to sue him, not to mention that she made the chief go to him in the jail and ask for all his equipment back and his walkie talkie and force cell phone!!! And from that point forward in my brothers life, he's never been the same. His dreams were taken away from him right there in the cell. And I think that that depression, lead to is tow other DUI's he got consecutively afterwards.
So Good luck to your friend.! I didn't mean to put a downer on your day besides what you're already dealing with, but I thought that hearing the reality, may put things into perspective for the situation at hand.

At least in C.A. they have a zero tolerance policy, he will not be able to get a state trooper job, or pretty much any government job especially those involving driving government vehicles, he will face a fine of up to 10,000, a possibility of 2 weeks in jail (although this usually doesnt happen on first offenses) they will suspend his license for at least 1 year, and he will have to take all kinds of classes which will also cost lots of money to rehabilitate him as a "safe driver".

Its crazy.

It depends on what state you live in... um, without that, it's not clear.

I think though, having a DUI/DWI will affect his chances at a state trooper job. But, I think that until you get like 2 or 3... it's stil a misdemeanor.

Penalties for DWI vary ,depending on the number of offenses, injuries caused by you (if any), how high your blood alcohol is, and other factors.

In oregon you get thrown in jail for a short time, your license is suspended, and your next one you lose it for good.
