President Mubarak inaugurated the new Cairo Opera House of the Egyptian National Cultural Center on October 10th 1988, seventeen years after the Royal Opera House had been destroyed by fire
Before construction was finished, the khedive commissioned an inaugural performance that should reflect ancient Egyptian history. French archaeologist Auguste Mariette Pacha, in the khedive’s service, wrote a synopsis of the history of Egypt which served the respected Italian librettist Antonio Ghislanzoni as a basis for his libretto. Giuseppe Verdi was commissioned by the khedive to compose the music. The result was the famous opera, Aida, with its heroic quality, powerful dramatic scenes and its passionate music. However, the Opera House opened with Rigoletto, an earlier masterpiece by Verdi. Allegedly due to the Franco-Prussian War, the costumes and scenery for Aida, which had been commissioned in Paris, could not be transported to Cairo. Yet, other sources imply that Verdi did not complete the opera in time. Aida was first performed in 1871. The Khedivial Opera House was the first on the African continent to perform world famous operas and symphonic masterpieces.
