My 16yr old was very happy as a child but as soon as she hit 14 her personality completely changed. I try to talk to her and help her solve her problems but nothing seems to work. I need advice from people on what I can do. I'm worried she might start going to extreme measure to help this feeling go away.

i went through that stage too.
the scary thing is that some people go into the
stage and they never come back out of it. Most people
feel this way because the feel that no one cares for them even
if people tell them the love them all the time. The only reason I came back out was because i was hanging out with a lot of "emo-ish people" and i started hanging out with more "preppy people" and they sorta pulled me out of it.

Teens feel alsorts of things to the extreme. Their hormones are all over the place, and consequently so are they. They are suddenly changing from childhood into an udult, and that can be quite scary.
Your daughter sounds like many others who are going through it. It is a difficult time for them. Does she actually say she is feeling depressed? If so, it may be due to pressure from school or something. Xams will be looming and the pressure will be on, but at 14 it's more likely to be hormonal.
Just keep your patience with her, and keep reassuring her. That's all you can do. If you are very worried, then you can always take her to see your GP.

been there done that. Don't want to go back! Teen years are the worst. You got snobs jerks and geeks and in the end they all feel the same. I have a teen a wonderful 14 year old god help me. Back talking slamming doors (took her door off for a week) needless to say that went over real good with her friends. (hahaha) I'm trying hard to keep my cool and so far it's been OK. BUT she knows when she pushes me to far. Treat her like an adult but also as your child and don't forget she WILL get through this. We all did.......

Mostly it has to do with hormones. She should see a counselor, and perhaps be on antidepressants.
Studies have shown that teen depression is much higher than previously thought.

It is a very hard time for teens, they rely too much on fitting in, and frankly teen girls can be total b!tches. All it takes is one to get the ball rolling and someones life can turn to he!!.

Counseling should help, building her self-esteem is so important, and talking to a non judgmental adult. Sometimes kids just want a sounding board not a problem solver.

Teen depression is no small matter, even though it's likely hormone related.

Take her to the doctor and explain her personality change and the consistency of her depression.

If his suggested treatment or lack of it, doesn't feel right, get a second opinion.

Just don't let it go, or as you fear she could go to extremes to alter her mood. Better a prescribed and controlled substance or hormone treatment to stabilize her moods, than street drugs or alcohol.

Good luck.

im not a fan of the blame it on the hormone theory. shes a person and her emotions, behaviours and cognitions all interact. i think you need to be willing to examine yourself as a parent, you could be part of the problem too. i reccomend family therapy once a week for you and her, and a regular session once a week just for her, so she would have it twice a week. you could also see a pyschiatirst to see if she needs medication for her depression.
