Pet shops are usually get their dogs from puppy mills. So they may become sick and usually inbred .And a breeder[ depending on the breed] can be high. The kind of breed can be higher then other breeds. The Newspaper of your local town may have some real nice prices. But check and see if they are puppy mills, Then there is the local shelter and the cost is really cheap. They want to have the dog fixed. Which is really healthier for the dog. They have puppies and older dogs both at the shelter. And a lot of them need a good home.

Your local animal rescue. The dogs are checked over and personality analysed so you can had a good idea if they'd fit into your home.
If you want a pure-bred for some reason, then contact the kennel club to get a good breeder recommended. Or talk with your vet.
Please don't go to a pet shop or buy one off the street, or paper. You don't know if you're supporting a bad pet farm or not.

Go to your local animal shelter, or the pound. They have the best dogs ever, these dogs and even cat's are just sitting there waiting for a new home.
I got my last two dogs from the pound, one was a Sheppard and the other was a lab mix. Both were the best dogs I'd ever had. They were loving and just overall the best dogs I've ever had.
The lab was especially great, she was totally protective of me and just the sweetest dog there ever was. She loved to play.
I'd say go to one of these places, why spend big money on a dog when there are so many animals that are in need of homes, just waiting for some one to love them. While people that are just wanting to make money keep selling dogs that they have been breeding. It is such a sad thing, such a waste, there are a lot of beautiful animal as I said, just waiting for some one to love them.
They make better pet too, they are so happy to have a new home with some one who loves them. Plus most of these places will fix them and micro chip them for you. It really is a savings to you in the end.
Good luck with getting your new dog!!

Do you want a mixed breed or a pedigree, a puppy or an adult. There are many rescue centres that have many dogs of all ages and sizes. Take a look there first as there are many dogs just waiting to give you loads of love and are in rescue due to no fault of there own. There'll be a small fee but that's just to cover costs while it's been in rescue.

Please don't "buy" a dog. There are so many dogs already looking for homes. You may have to pay something to adopt one form a shelter. If you have a specific breed in mind, you can let the people at your local shelter know and they will call you if one comes up for adoption. It may not be a puppy but then you don't have to deal with the whole house training thing.

Once you have decided what breed of dog you want and have done some research on that breed contact the breed club and ask for a list of their breeders. Always see the puppy with it's mother and make sure the parents are health tested.
If you want an older dog then visit your local humane shelter.

DON'T BUY!! RESCUE!!!! Millions of great animals are in shelters and they come at a low cost with shots and neutering/spaying already taken care of. I got my dog there and could not have asked for a better friend or companion. She's super!!! Why not give another stray a chance?

there are lots of ways, on the Internet through adds in the paper, but where ever you buy 1 make sure you see pups with their mother and where they have been reared, don't arrange to meet half way.you can always check with the rspca, pds, or a breed rescue, they can give good advise, and there are lots of healthy older dogs looking for a forever home.

Don't go and buy one from a breeder but go to a rescue centre like Battersea or the Dogs' Trust and give a home to a poor pup that has been abandoned or maltreated.
