In 1881 there was no Panama Canal, so as was said, it was around Cape Horn........England to San Fransisco via the Cape is nigh on 20,000 miles; a sailing cargo ship or passenger ship could do, maybe, 8 knots average made good.....so at least 100 days; 200 wouldn't be unheard of.....

... more like 2/3 months or so. Sailing boats only managed about 4 knots or so in those days - and they had to go all the way down and around the Cape Horn - if they were lucky and made it and the wind was right.

hmmm.......it would have to come thru the south...Bahamas,Mexico and then...i`d say about 2-3 weeks to the east of US and then another week to the west, L.A. or San Francisco.......1881 hmmm
