I had the same question some time ago, so I looked into it by reading and talking to Muslims that I knew. I had been frustrated by some of the attitudes I thought they had about women. The more I looked for the negative I was amazed to find that they really had some core values that made for a strong family unit. I also found out I was generalizing too much. I think communion is a pretty strange practice, so I also see a lot of unfamiliar Muslim traditions strange as well. What a waste of energy to see only the negative in all Catholics or Muslims just because I can't completely understand them. Muslims have very strong family values. That is a good thing. The religion does a lot to sanctify the family. If you don't want to believe that, then there is a lot of bad in you. You end up making them right about us.

I am converting to Islam and I acutally apreciate your question.

I have always made it a point to research things I did not entirely understand. I never really had a problem with Islam as I was mostly informed about it by the media and those who see the world through the media, both of which aren ot the best sources of information. So when I began researching Islam to uncover the accuracy of what I was beign told about Islam I started to see a patern immediately.

Most steriotypes of Islam are the complete opposite. I encourage you to keep researching it from many different sources but cautious as to what sources you are gettign it from.

-The internet can be almost 100x worse than the media.

But here is a quote from the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)

The most perfect of the believers in faith are the best of them in morals. And the best among them are those who are best to their wives.

Keep asking questions:)

About 1400 years ago, in his last sermon, Prophet Muhammad (peace be on him) said:

“All mankind is from Adam and Eve, an Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab nor a non-Arab has any superiority over an Arab; also a white has no superiority over a black nor a black has any superiority over a white — except by piety and good action. Learn that every Muslim is a brother to every Muslim and that the Muslims constitute one brotherhood. Nothing shall be legitimate to a Muslim which belongs to a fellow Muslim unless it was given freely and willingly. Do not therefore do injustice to yourselves. Remember one day you will meet Allah and answer your deeds. So beware: Do not stray from the path of righteousness after I am gone.”

Of course there are many positive things about Islam. Family ties, respect for parents, honesty ... to many to mention. There are some few negative things as well

Because of verses in the Quran that dealt with stars and planets, muslims were inspired to study astronomy.

Thus muslim men have contributed the most discoveries during the mediaeval times.

-The first telescope
-The first observatory
-The first astrolabe

And many many many other things.

Most importantly, muslim astronomers were calculating the size of the earth, when europe was still discussing if the earth was flat.

What do you see? Only what your preacher tells you, or only what FOX news tells you is Islam? Have you ever even read the Quran? Try it. Its a real eye-opener.

Interesting architecture. Some decent poetry.

Same as Christianity, really.

Nothing I'm aware of. Any positive values that a Muslim might espouse are due to shared human nature, not the religion.
