There are many types of E. coli. They use it to determine if water is contaminated with sewage.
In your body they may help with some final digestion, and they may give us some vitamins. Vitamin K is supplied by bacteria in our gut. New borns have to be given a shot of it, to help in clotting.

I wouldn't say there are any ways E. Coli helps the host, except maybe that it strengthens your immune system.

Are you doing the bacteriology lab? Because I have that same question. Thank you for asking it, because one of the answers really helped me. It's a hard lab!
