I've heard that black pepper is bad for you, and that chilly peppers are good. I have no idea if it's true or not, but when I have a temperature, I eat hot food, and feel better within little time....maybe it's just self-convincing though :-)

I myself have wondered the same thing, after hearing some negative comments on it. A few nutritionists and naturopathic doctors have told me that it can easily grow mold, unless it is fresh ground, it will make anyone gain weight, and it isn't digestable. Meaning it comes out the same form it went in. A lot of sports players agree that it contributes to weight gain. I read that in a few magazine and newspaper articles. Here's some things I found using and internet search that other people have said:

"I'm a nutrition professional. Common black pepper is indeed bad for you. It is nothing but an irritant, contains no nutritional value. However, it's not, like... the WORST thing for you. I suggest switching to cayenne, which has healthy warming qualities in addition to being spicy as all hell"

"Black pepper has safrole in it. In the 1960's the FDA banned the use of safrole in food after it was shown to cause cancer in rats".

"Too much black pepper is one of the causes of kidney stones"

I have also found out that it is used for Insecticide and Deer Repellent.
I myself have decided not to use it anymore. I do use cayenne from time to time. Over abundance in ANYTHING is never good for us. A lot of people believe it promotes digestion but a lot of people also believe artificial sweetners can be 'natural' and that they don't wreak havoc on our bodies...

Not sure if it's good for you but I certainly don't think it's bad for you, in moderation like everything else.
