Flying is the only possibility. Check the airlines online for cheap flights. There are all sorts of things that will lower prices - off season, advanced purchase, special offers - look around.

Don't concentrate on the Pacific. There are some very cheap flights to Europe from the USA and there are more airlines flying from Europe to Australia than there are across the Pacific. Also look at going via Hong Kong, Tokyo or Singapore. Again there are more options and more airlines involved.

The most direct route is not necessarily the cheapest.

Unfortunately, given its distance from the US, there is no truly cheap way to get to Australia. You can look around for cheap flights (Qantas does have sales occasionally) and travel during the off season (i.e June to August). Good luck!
