I've had these two cats for over two years and they've always been indoor cats. One of them got brought into the humane society when she was about 1.5 years old and the other one spent the first 6 months of her life in a cage. I think the first one lived outside for the first part of her life, but the other one has never been outside.
We live in a really small 1 BR apartment, and I know both of them want to go outside. We're kind-of in the back of the complex, there's lots of woods back here, and there's a parking lot and small road people drive back and forth on pretty frequently. There's also a TON of stray cats that hang out by the dumpsters.
Do you all think that if I let them go outside they would be okay? Would they avoid the cars and the other cats, and would they be able to find their way back to our apartment?

No they wouldn't be ok. stray cats carry disease that there are no vaccines for and your cats could fall prey to. like leukemia and feline aids. do you want your cats to get into fights or get run over? they will not steer clear of strays they will head toward a fight and you will be responsible for their deaths. Don't let them out. You are just feeling some wierd sense of guilt but don't . you took these two cats to protect and care for them don't just throw them out into a world they don't know and watch them die.

Why would you even think of letting them go outside, after they have been inside for so long??? I think that would be very cruel to let them out with the TON'S of stray cats that are hanging around the Dumpster, and expose them to diseases, cars and other wild animals that may have rabies and other things. Better to find them a good loving home, as it seems that you are not too interested in their well being any longer!!!

I seriously would NEVER let your indoor kitties go outside... especially since they are not accustomed to it.. They could get hit by a car or get a disease from the strays such as Feline Leukemia which is deadly and VERY contagious, The other cats may attack your kitties and leave HUGE openings which would need to be stitched up... its not worth the worry or money... keep your kitties alive and healthy keep them indoors!

If they've been inside their whole lives, you better be careful. What I would do is I would just put them on a leash or something (lol) and bring them outside. If they don't want to go, bring them inside and forget it. If they stay out there, let them wander and see what they do. If they go toward the road, I would'nt let them go outside. If they don't, keep letting them wander. If you think they're comfortable, let them loose but still watch them. Then make your decision. Do what's right and be careful. They've been inside their whole life, it won't hurt them to stay that way, it's your decision. Good luck, that's sorta a hard choice.

I really think you should let them stay inside. I rescued a cat from a baseball field and he lived inside a one bedroom home for the rest of his life. Never needed to be let out. He never seemed to mind. I had all kinds of toys for him. I was never going to let my little kitty want for anything again.
As for out side it is very bad for cats out side. The life span of a outdoor cat is less than 5 years. You do not want strays near your cats as there carry nasty things. As for the woods. My friend lost here cats to wild dogs.
If you love your babies buy them toys to keep them busy inside.

i personally wouldn't because, i have 2 cats also, and if u put them outside there are a bunch of dangerous things outside for the cats. they could get picked up by someone or get runed over. so if i were u i would let them stay inside.

Its probably not a good idea. If they are REALLY trying to get out, you can try to find somewhere they can go where they won't get killed, or you can let them out and hope for the best. Chances are, your cats will get lost (if they've never been outside) or get killed by cars and such.

Personally I say no, they've been indoors too long and wouldn't be able to take care of themselves, plus indoor cats live longer and you'd be exposing them to diseases and cars that the drivers don't pay attention to animals.

I have cats myself and they are indoor cats. My vet recomended NEVER to take them outside because they don't have proper vaccines like if they got bit by a cat. Cats are usually not very loyal like dogs. They go to people to get food and go. Or atleast that was my experience with cats that have stopped at my door. I fed them and they left. Never saw them again. My cousin let her cat out and never saw him again for six months. I suggest you check with your vet.

They've been indoors all their lives, the outside world would be a big shock to them. They don't know what a car is, much less how badly one could hurt them. I strongly advise against it.
