The bigger the onion the sweeter it is, smaller onions are hotter and stronger in flavour.

When you slice the onion and begin to cut it up,check your eyes and see if you are crying. If you are it is a hot onion if not it is a sweet onion.

The small onions will bring tears to you eyes
The medium ones are sweet, make sure they are firm and not discolored. UGH!
Some of the Large onions are sweet and then some of them are hot and will make your eyes tear when cutting them.

when an onion is bigger than a soft ball it is sweet when it varries from a tennis ball to a baseball it is hot. you can also tell when an onion is sweet is when the top layer(s) are very thick and hard

No seriously though, try tasting it or even smelling it. The sweet one will smell sweet, the hot will smell spicy.

sweet one has a tinge of green on it...hot one have a tinge of purple on it...still unsure,bite a piece of it to find out
