Sure Saxi..... but don't forget the abs because most problems are due to muscle IMBALANCE, not muscle weakness. I bought a book on stretching for my problem and so most of my back-strengthening exercises were more stretches.

Do alternating toe touches.
Use a rowing machine.
Several machines at the gym - a back extension, the ab machine for the obliques....
Lie face-down on the floor - raise your upper body and your legs off the floor

lie flat on front, and raise your legs off the floor. your whole legs - you should feel your hip bones pushing in to the floor and your thighs should be off the floor too. lift up and down for ten reps holding up for a count of ten on the last.

standing up - fold yourself down as far as you can go - chest to knees is aim. bend your knees if you need to. wrap your arms around the back of your legs - hugging yourself. thats a good stretch too.

an exercise ball (also called swiss ball ) is really good for back exercise (as well as crunches etc). much safer on the joints.

good luck.

Crunches. Toning the abs really helps lower back problems.
