Any suggestions on prep work, securing the area in case of overspray, etc???? Never done this before, and can't afford to pay to have it done. Any detailed instructions or helpful sites would be greatly appreciated!

Go to a speciality paint supplier, where you can get an anti rust paint, etch primer and top coat.

If you are familiar with spraying fine otherwise use a brush Can you take them off and do them in a garage.

If they are really bad you may need to get them sand blasted. There are some small units available but you will have to see if the hire shops have them.

I have done both sand blasting and spray painting on an industrial scale
Railway flat decks etc
We actually used cast iron grit, which is hazardous to ones health if not using proper safety equipment

Done this many times. First take a wire brush and scrub down the whole fence, make sure where the rust spots are that you get them entirely off. When finished hose down the fence to get any dirt and the rust dust off. When the fence is dry paint it with a Good rust protection paint. You can buy it in spray cans or brush on I prefer brush on it is more time consuming but it does a better job as you can put this on more evenly, and you don't want to be doing this every year...............Have fun and good luck

Sandpaper the worst rust spots. Apply a metal paint primer and then a paint designed for metal like Rustoleum. Your local paint shop can help you.
