Many years ago the Royal and Ancient Golf ***. decided to standardize all the golf courses in Scotland. Up until this point courses had what ever amount of holes they could fit in there area. This made it difficult for people to compete at different places. So a group of people from the different areas got together and formed the R&A and came up with a set of rules and standards that could be used for everyody. Today alot of those rules still exist but with some modifications of course.

It all started years ago in Scotland where Mad Mick McMad invented the game of 'GOLF'. (He called it 'GOLF' because all of the other four letter words were taken).

Mad Mick Mcmad and Aberdeen Angus (His mate) went out early in the morning and tried to play as many 'holes' as they could, returning to the base hitting spot every time.

When it got dark, they stopped counting. The number they got to was eighteen but they had forgotten that they had spent a lot of time walking backwards to the original base spot.

This error was realised in the 'Nineteenth Hole' later and it was sacredly sworn by all those present that they would NEVER reveal to their wives and girlfriends that it would only take an hour to play a full round of golf if they took as much of the countryside up as possible and joined all the holes together. This is 9 holes going out and 9 holes coming back...

This obviously meant that the remainder of the day vould be spent in the pub and is the main reason why golfers all return home 'roaring' drunk.

This is my theory on the reason why courses are 18 holes long.

Why is it 10 frames for bowling, 9 innings for baseball, etc. its just the way the game developed over time.

Cause 19 will be one too many and 17 would be one too less.
