I think as long as he would be willing to work very hard. Im and 8th grader and i think it would be to hard for me. Just ask him these questions:
Why does he want to take it?
Does he want to take it because his friends are?
Is he willing to commit alot of free time to learning it?
Will his others grades suffer?
Is there any other classes he would like to take?

I think it would be a great idea. Learning foreign language earlier in life is easy than learning one later. With it only being 8th grade, Im sure it will be very basic. It will definately give them a head start if they decide to take it in highschool or college. Its a great age to try something new. As far as I know all highschool students are required to take a foreign language, I regret taking German, simply because it has now value to me know, I only took it because it was the easy one at my school. If they are to stick with it, Chinese is a great language to learn. Thinking ahead to college and starting a career, there is a high demand for people with business degrees that a fluent in any asian language. Most are guaranteed jobs at graduation. Also if it turns out that they dont like it, Its better for them to find out now, than later. I think the most important thing for you to do is support them as much as possible, even if you dont agree with their decision. Being only 14 its good to let them learn from thier own decisions, either being a good lesson or bad. At least they will know you are supporting them. And who knows this could be the best decision they will ever make in the long run. I hope this helps.

Why would you want to talk him out of something he is showing an interest in? Just because he is below average in English does not mean he won't flourish in Chinese (or any other language for that matter). Try supporting him and let him try it - if it doesn't work out, he can always change his elective.

If your son seems interested in learning something, anything you should support him. I can think of so many other things he could be interested in that are a complete waste of time (video games for example.) I think it sounds a whole lot cooler than learning Spanish or French. Maybe you could even make a deal with him to give more effort in his English class in order to take Chinese with your consent.

Yeah I would tell him that it is going to be alot of hard work but encourage him to do it. I wanted to take Japanese in High School I was taking 2 English classes and I was a below average student in both of them and my Guidance counselor talked me out of taking Japanese. As it turns out I have done pretty well with the english language and to this day I regret not going ahead with that damn Japanese class. I still want to learn Japanese.

well i think it would be a bad idea too. there are only 26 letters in the american alphabet but over 2,000 in the chianese alphabet. big difference there. once he masters english then he could try chianese. it is a hard language to learn. spanish would be better because it is the 2nd most spoken language in the world. but still only after he masters english. hope this helps. good luck.

anything that a child shows interest and initiative in on his own should be encouraged, why shoot him down, he will eventually give up anyway if you don't encourage him to try new things....plenty of time to be practical when he's an adult, just because he's not doing well in one subject is not a good reason.....besides, world is getting smaller, speaking chinese could come in handy in the business world

I don't think you need ammo to convince him. You are the parent and you dont have to allow him to take it.
