I am planning on buying a used road bicycle in order to save a few bucks. When I actually go to look at the bikes, what are key things I should be looking for, in regards to the condition of the bike? I don't want to buy a lemon of a bike, that has numerous problems, so I want to know what are the essential things to look out for. I also plan on giving them a test ride as well. Thanks.

Firstly make sure you are looking at the right sized bike

If there is no obvious damage or cracks in the frame. Check for wear and tear. slop in the rear derailleur, marks inside the front derailleur, the shape and width of the teeth ,chain wheel and cluster (have a look at a newy to see what they should look like).
and look at the wheels where the spokes touch each other. heavy use will show as an obvious divot.

If all this checks out then you are probably on to a good buy

A fit up and service wouldn't go astray.

Check thje frame for obvious damage, scratches or any sign that bike was crashed at one time or another. Check for any play in the bottom bracket, check the chainrings and cassette for any wear and check the wheels to see if they are true.

the main thing is to check the frame (any cracks, major scratches, drop outs straights, etc.)... if the frame is OK, then you can always replace and/or upgrade the components...
