Unfortunately, you need to change 'extremist' to 'mainstream'. If the mainstream Muslims didn't support the 'extremists', they wouldn't be dancing in the streets after 9/11, and their governments would be speaking up against Muslim atrocities around the world.

All it takes if for a few good people to do nothing

Just like mainstream muslims do not actively denounce their extremist members for bad behavior, we have mainstream christians that do not actively denounce extremist members for bad behavior.

We have to police our own before trying to impose our will on others.

Extremists of any kind give themselves the "right" to do what ever they feel is necessary to further their cause.
In their eyes they don't consider themselves evil.

They have absolutely no rights whatsoever.

They think that they are doing the right things in the cause of Allah, but what they are actually doing is going against him and his teachings.

Killing civilians is strictly prohibited in Islam, as shown by these quotes:

"Do not kill any old person, any child or any woman" (Abu Dawud, Hadith)

"Do not kill the people who are sitting in places of worship" (Musnad of Ibn Hanbal)

"If any one slew a person - unless it be for murder or for spreading mischief in the land - it would be as if he slew the whole people" - Quran 5:32 .

The Prophet himself also stated (quoting from what Allah told him) that suicide bombing is forbidden, as it is a means of commiting suicide: "He who kills himself with anything, Allah will torment him with that in the fire of Hell".

And furthermore, Islam opposes forced conversion, "Let there be no compulsion in religion" - Surah Al-Baqarah 2:256.

These muslim extremists, like all other religious extremists are sick cowards who would even be branded themsevles as "infidels" according to the Sunnah.

They are blinded and brainwashed by their radical peers into following an edited and twisted version of Islam, and unfortunately this is the distorted version of Islam that is portayed by the media today.

@ Irish_giant

Where on earth did you get this silly idea from? Ordinary mainstream muslims all over the world condemn this act and you let yourself be fooled by a vocal bunch of extremists who wrongly claim to represent the entire population of 1.5 billion muslims in the world.

And what exactly do you mean by "dancing on the streets". If you mean the fact that they still exist of course then it's because the Americans and British are making then.

By invading a sovereign Muslim country on baseless and unprovable evidence of WMDs and then changing the reason to "spreading freedom" after realizing that they were wrong in thinking that WMDs existed and they've just a triggered a bloody civil war, they've created a perfect sense of anger and resentment at their actions and as a result, this radicalizes a small proprtion of them into recruits.

As for your other question:

Those are not "muslim" atrocities. They are terrorist atrocities.

During the terrorist attacks of 9/11, Madrid Train Bombings, Bali, 7/7 there were a number of fairly vocal condemnations by Islamic governments around the world: (I'm surprised you haven't heard of any)

“We will continue to fight the scourge of terrorism against humanity and reject the culture of extremism and violence in any form or shape, from whatever source or place, regardless of justifications or motives, being fully aware of their dangers as a plague that threatens the peace and stability of the whole world.” – Hosni Mubarak, President of Egypt

“Is this the way of life that Islam teaches us? That we fight amongst ourselves and feel scared of fellow Muslims.” – Pervez Musharraf, Prime Minister of Pakistan
“sadist and inhuman crimes.” - Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, President of Indonesia

“[speaking of 9/11] It is a human duty to show sympathy with the American people and be with them at these horrifying and awesome events which are bound to awaken human conscience” – Muhammar Gaddafi, Prime Minister of Libya

These were only a few of the various condemnations by Muslim governments worlwide.
