The Suzuki books go along with the Suzuki "program". It emphasizes repetition and learning by ear. If you follow the program strictly, I guess it works as well as a lot of other method books. I studied with a Suzuki teacher for a long time, but he didn't follow the program very strictly (contrary to most Suzuki students, I can sight-read like a beast). They do have good content though.

Amazon.com usually has second hand music books. I found a $50 book for about $10. A lot of them are also in good shape. I would try there or e-bay. Also, if you are close to a university or collage you could try their book stores.
