Why is 888 associated with gambling?

it's just I see a website "www.888.net" for gambling - just wondering why the "888" ?

I have heard on a radio show that the number 8 is associated with luck. The host of the radio show suggested for good luck you write the number eight on a piece of paper and place that paper in your wallet before you enter a casino. Callers to the radio show called in claiming they tried this and it worked for them. So, 888 or triple good luck to you.

I used to play this video slot machine where if you lined up 888 you won the jackpot. The jackpot would usually have to max out first though before you had a realistic chance at winning it.

but it has two things going for it:
#1 its easy to remember;
and
#2 in China, 8 is a lucky number.

i think its just one up from 777 which is the number on most fruit machines. and when 888.com came along they either wanted to thought of as one better or 777.com was taken

Actually, I think you are referring to aces and 8s. It is known as "the dead mans hand" It is the hand that Wild Bill Hickok was holding when he was shot dead in Deadwood, South Dakota (AA & 888)
The true story is that he was holding two Aces and Two 8s. He was never delt the 5th card.
