It means a person consumes himself with his own hatred.
The Wrath of God period in Revelation. Hell. And the
Lake of Fire, are all inevitabilites we suffer due to our own
self-destructiveness!
Get your minds out of the natural, (the story-telling of Old). And into the spiritual, our God-given minds, (reason, and common sense).
We live in the Here and Now!

By the things you do.
The malice you perpetrate.
The maliciousness you do the things to people. You are filling that cup, your cup.
You will have to drink it. It is the cup of God's vengeance.

Anger is the fire that consumes the soul. Hence, a Deadly Sin. Why do you think many religions preach FORGIVENESS? It is breaking the cup of vengeance to free the soul.
