They are not free. You can go to the Microsoft Office web site and download a trial. I believe that the trial versions switch to read only after the trial period expires.
I use OpenOffice.org which is free and compatible.

You can't do it for free -- at least not legally. Best legal option (for free) would be substituting it with open office at openoffice.org. It's not exactly the same, but pretty darn close, and the files are compatible with the office suite.

You can't download it legally.
The only legal way to get it is: buy the disk with it on it, or have it some already installed on your computer.
