its hard to get rid of cold sores because they are a virus. try and maintain good eating habits and take a multivitamin so your body has the right nutrients to battle off the virus. there are ointments and "lip balms" you can obtain at a local drugstore that can reduce the size of the cold sore.

Herpes simplex virus is what creates cold sores/fever blisters. Anybody could get exposed from drinking someone else's drink, share utensils, sharing chapstick, and by lip contact with an individual that is carrying herpes simplex virus. The swollen red bumps may be fairly uncomfortable blisters which may turn up near the mouth area, or perhaps the inside of the mouth or nostril, elsewhere on the face, and anywhere else on the skin.
They might appear because of greater stress and anxiety, colds, fever, winter weather, certain foods, as well as an excess of sunshine. The region could start to tingle, and after that a blister could surface. The sore could dry out and produce a yellowish crusting. Cold sores may last anywhere from 7 to 14 days. You can attempt to hide the cold sore using cosmetics, but this generally makes the cold sore even worse.
To exterminate cold sores, you can attempt covering them with a cold sore specific ointment, make use of chapstick with sunscreen, dab aloe vera, take echinacea, vitamins C in addition to E, and completely preventing pressing it. Through implementing a handful of changes in lifestyle, it is actually doable to stop cold sores and also inhibit them from reappearing.

When I have a first sign of a cold sore I immediately use a Q-tip and dip it in Listerine Moughtwash then apply. Do it 3 or 4 times a day. But I don't have a good solution if you already have a blister. You might try vitimin E on it.

Sleep, eating well, decrease stress. The key is to keep your immune system strong so it can heal the wound.
As others have said, it is a virus so there is nothing your brother can do but let it run it's course.
But caution him that cold sores are HIGHLY contagious and easily spread to other parts of your body so after touching it, wash hands very well with soap and water (or use Purell). The virus can also live on damp towels, etc.

I REALLY wanted you to know that you can EASILY never have to deal with another horrible, awful, nasty cold-sore for the rest of your life!!
I got them every winter my whole life until 3 years ago (I'm 36 now) and they were the BANE of my existence...the whole process took weeks to heal and would leave a scar for at least 2 months sometimes!
I was reading a message board on www.curezone.org and discovered the PERFECT remedy for both healing them and preventing them completely:
OLIVE LEAF EXTRACT
So, I buy the liquid tincture by "HerbPharm" and it has not failed me ONCE...Whenever I'm feeling drained, tired, stressed, or get that tingly feeling on my lip, I just load up on this stuff.
This is the one I buy:
http://www.nextag.com/Herb-Pharm-Olive-Leaf-66659849/prices-html
You can also get Olive Leaf at Whole Foods Market, and other natural food stores.
Very cheap.
The first time I tried it, I was actually halfway into a major eruption and I drank a bunch of the extract in some water.
AS I WAS DRINKING the stuff down, I could feel the swelling on my lip shrinking...I was in such shock--I ran to the mirror--it was shrinking before my eyes and within ten minutes my lip had returned to NORMAL...I began kissing the bottle of Olive Leaf...yeah, I really did!!
I had tried everything in the past...I can't begin to tell you what I went through...and it's now been 3 YEARS since I've had one!
I've been in the Alternative Medicine field for some time now, and offer individualized consultations:
