My aunt said she saw a policeman without his seat belt on and my brother in law (who knows everything *rolls eyes*) said that no state, county, or city police officer or emergency worker has to wear a seat belt while on duty in the government issued vehicle because they have to "jump out of the cars so quickly". I have never heard of this and think he is a moron...does anyone have any ideas or thoughts on this?

Police are required to wear seat belts. It has saved my life in several crashes and I would never drive without one.

Yes, seat buckets are actually a requirement for use with any federally owned government vehicle, and this would flow down to any state owned vehicle. There is also the problem for the person driving the car/truck that if they were on duty and had an accident, they would be liable for any personal injuries sustained because of failure to use a seat belt. What it really comes down to is the fact that most know they will not be ticketed by a fellow officer for failure to buckle up.

Emergency personnel are just like you and me if you have a seat belt law in your area then yes this applies to them as well. I also know that most businesses require people in company vehicles police cars and ambulances included to wear a seat belt to get better insurance rates for insuring these vehicles. Most of the police and ambulance workers in our area do wear their belts regularly.

They are required to wear seat belts, and as for the person that said police cars don't have seat belts in the back seats...yes they do, and maybe you should meet this girls brother because I think you two would get along great. Most officers have access to seatbelt extensions so that it makes it easier to buckle and unbuckle their seatbelts with all their gear on.

Yes they do. All laws apply to everyone. There no such thing as a law enforcment exemption to any law.

It takes 3 seconds to remove your seatbelt.

Police are at no less risk of injury in accident than anyone else.

And yes he is a moron, big time.

I doubt they need to. Firemen stand in Firetrucks. I don't think there are seatbelts in the back seats of police car. Maybe someone should cite them for that.
