You can ask to see their DD214. This will show in the awards section if they recieved a Vietnam service medal, which means they were "in country" so to speak. They can recieve a copy of their DD214 online through the VA (Veteran's Administration)website at www.va.gov.

If they do not want to provide you with the information, then there is no way to find out. Veterans are entitled to privacy as much as any other American, and the VA will respect this. Only military members with a Dishonorable Discharge can be found without the veterans permission since this is the result of a crime, and criminal records are public.

My moms boyfriend tells people he was in vietnam and that he watched his brother be shot to death. I however have done some investigating an there is no record of this or even that he had a twin brother. I am worried about my mom because I found many other things he lied about when doing a background check on him. He wasn t even born in this country. He has no proof of birth certificate or dd 124 papers. also he has a us ssc.
I am a bit upset because I come from a family in the military.

Talk to them. Talk to the person directly. First you must study up on the happenings of the War, and know your facts. Listen to the person who says they were in it, and I mean listen close. Your heart will tell you the answer if they were there or not. Vietnam vets will know what heart, and facts are. Bless them all.

Contact the bureau of Veterans Affairs. They have the records of every person that has served since WWI.

A good start is their age. Are they 53 or older?

If not, they probably didn't serve in Nam.

Because they will have the "thousand yard stare" like they have seen beyond. If you go to Iraq, you'll get it too.
