The Bible gives no indication.
However, when we see their devotion to God's work and their endurance and knowledge of the scriptures, we can conclude they were in training for the work ahead of them.

Common belief is that Jesus and John were entered into the Essene Sect in Qumran, at the southern end of the Dead Sea. They were perhaps sent there for instruction.

The rules at that time had novitiates live in the caves surrounding Qumran (where they found the Dead Sea Scrolls btw) for 2 years, living off the land, before being able to enter the monastery. Scholars believe that John the Baptist liked this living so much that he never actually entered the monastery, he just continued to live in the caves. This is why he was considered a wild man in those days, because he lived off the land.

Jesus, however, was supposedly entered into the sect and was taught there. There are many reasons why they think He was there ... one is that they also practiced baptism, although they did it on a daily basis. Another is that some of the teachings of Jesus correlate with some of the documents found with the Dead Sea Scrolls, showing that He took some of their stories to make His sermons.

They studied the Torah, participated and learned the Jewish customs, traditions and laws by their local Rabbi. Jesus became a carpenter so He must have worked alongside Joseph learning the skills of carpentry. Basically they grew up with the basic upbringing as anyone else at the time.

i'd tell you to go ask your priest but he won't tell you anything. jesus and john were homeboys. They would walk around town causing all sorts of trouble. they always used to visit Ali the store owner and would steal sweets and what not. And then jesus found out he has special powers. then he's 30 years old and the rest, as they say, is "history."

Well, unless we can find definitive text on their lives, we can only speculate they did the normal things of those times....played, went to school and church...conforming to the day's standards of knowledge and technology of the time. He probably learned carpentry, too, since that is what his father did...then started his ministry at age 30.

There's actually a piece of scripture about this. It's called the Infancy Gospel of Thomas.

In it, an adult sweeps away some water Jesus was playing with and he kills him! And some boys bully Jesus and he kills them! And the townspeople try to drive his family out for killing their children, and he turns them blind!

Ah, youthful hi-jinks.
