Aside from the cleanup, does it hurt the grill or cause a dangerous condition?

I don't know, but it would easier to either put a small pan with wood chips in water on the grill for added flavor. Or simply apply Liquid Smoke to the food. Chow

No, don't add charcoal, buy the flavored wood chips. They come in different flavors and are made to add to your gas grill. You can find them at your local grocery store or at WalMart in the outdoor section.

Use wood chips, if you want charcoal, use a charcoal grill.

Honestly...

If you want flavor, use the chips.

we used to use wood chips, soaked in water, wrapped in foil and i would poke a couple of small holes in the foil then put under grate.

I would add Mesquite wood....no it's not dangerous.
