We took our dog to the vet last week with an eye infection. He prescribed eye ointment and we have a struggle putting it in , we have to muzzle our dog ( who normally isnt nasty ) and our dog goes into a frenzy. We are now coming to the end of the treatment but the infection isnt better. Has anyone ever been given tablets for their animals eye infection, or a sedative to calm the dog down ?

Your mom's mom, is not a veterinarian. Only a vet can diagnose your dog and if you can't afford to take your dog to the vet, you should have never taken responsibility for her care. If she does actually have an Eye Infection, it's not only painful but if the Infection gets really bad, your dog can go blind. If it is an Eye Infection, she will need Antibiotics which only a veterinarian can prescribe to clear up the Eye Infection. Nothing that you try to do for her at home and nothing that you try to get from a pharmacist will help. If anything, the wrong medication will make the situation worse. The only option you do have, is to take her to the vet and get her properly diagnosed and treated. Call the vet when their office opens in the morning, make payment arrangements with your vet and get you poor dog in and seen. You have No Excuse not to.

If the eye infection isn't getting better, he needs a recheck at the vet. They may need to stain his eye to see if he has a corneal ulcer, or do any number of other tests (glaucoma test, tear test). They may switch medications. Oral medication is typically not used for eye problems.

Also, as a tip with putting in his eye meds, not sure if you've tried this already, but try coming from behind so he can't see that you're about to put something in his eye until it's too late. Like when you are holding the eye meds, don't go in front of his face--come from behind his head, and then give him a treat when he's done. Worth a shot :-)

Sorry but this needs to be evaluated by a vet and quickly. It is possible that something has scratched or irritated the cornea - a corneal ulcer. They are super painful - the eye tears a lot and the dog will either squint or hold the eye closed - it would be very sensitive to light. The dog will have a tendency to paw at the eye also. It needs to be evaluated and proper medication used. OTC medication without knowing what the problem is could cause further injury possibly leading to blindness. It sounds like she is in pain - don't take a chance of this getting worse - please get her seen. Perhaps the doctor can set up a payment plan with you.

This ointment is not painful. If your dog is used to being handled on the head then you should be able to get the ointment in without very much struggle. One problem with his eye infection may be that in all the thrashing around he is doing, it is very hard to get the ointment where it should go. I've never had a dog take pills for an eye infection or need a sedative to put in ointment. Your dog needs to learn to accept some simple restraints.

first is yours a small breed or a large breed??
I usually use steeped warm tea bags but when that doesn't work I use prescribed drops. Prescription sedation for your pet can be arranged from your Vet but only use as a last resort.

Most dogs react from fear or to your energy and maybe you are nervous about putting in these drops in your pets eyes. Try calmly sitting on the floor having your dog lying down head on your lap, stroke their head and then place the drops in. If you are doing both eyes just repeat. Remember the calmer you are the calmer they are. Take your dog back into the vet should be checked anyway since you say the infection isn't any better and watch how he/she puts the drops in.

The drops were prescribed as oral medication isn't as effective.

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://tinyurl.im/4lc45

A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

I've had this problem with eye ointment, so the next time I went to the vet I asked if I could have eye drops instead which were much easier to administer. Do as Bisworth suggests & go behind the dog & over his head.
Good Luck
