In UK law - this question is on the England/Ireland site - infanticide is the killing of a child under the age of 12 months by a mother who is suffering from the effects of lactation or post natal depression.

Ignore any other answers (especially the one that says there is no such offence).

It is basically an alternative to the charge of murder or manslaughter and accounts for the fact that women suffer from depression due to the effects of both childbirth and lactation.

In general terms, as opposed to in law, infanticide is a general term for the killing of young children.

Infanticide is the killing of a child under 1year of age(uk)by the childs mother. It came about to make an offence which didnt carry death when mothers killed their children due to post natal depression when the only penalty for murder was death. In other cultures infanticide is used when refering to the killing of babies such as the killing of female babies or killing babies for for economic reasons as an alternative to birth control. In the case you mention murder would be charged murder as this is not a mother and the child is not under 12 months old no lawful reason for killing the child would be seem to exist

The only time I have ever heard of infanticide is when a girl from my hometown was kicked in the stomach by her boyfriend when she was pregnant. The baby died and her bf went to jail, charged with infanticide. So to the person who said there is no such thing, your wrong. I love it when I get to say that.

Not infanticide, he's too old. I've never heard of child homicide.

These are moral terms, not legal ones. I believe the law doesn't discriminate, homicide is regardless of age.

It would be murder. End of story.

Infanticide is only used when a baby has been killed by it's mother whom has been proven to have suffered from Post Natal Depression at the time of the offence. Such people are usually sentenced more leniently by courts.

The answer is it would be murder of a human who is one year or older.

Infanticide is the killing of a baby who is up to 12 months old by a mother. It was created as a lesser offence to murder because the mother may be suffering the effects of post natal depression.

There are other offences of murder of a human less than one year old (ie for people that aren't related), and what I described above for killing someone over the age of 1.

There's a country in the Middle East where it's OK to kill a kid if you're the parent, given that the kid is your actual property.

I wanna take my kids there on vacations next year. We'll have a blast.
