The Book of Revelations was written by a monk who lived on a deserted island in a cave and for years denied himself food, water, basic hygiene and castigated himself at every opportunity. I suppose if I denied myself all basic human comforts and wished for death at every opportunity, I too would write some pretty amazing stories. Native Americans as part of their religion will go into the desert for days without water and food, and they see all manner of god(s) and creatures. Read Don Juan and his adventures with peyote and physical denials, his visions are not that much different from Revelations.
My point is, if you deprive the human body of it's basic needs, you will see all kinds of stuff, and I think John of Patmos encountered just such an experience. I have not and do not plan to take the delusions of such a person as my own path. I prefer to have my own illusions.

Yes, I did. I took a seven-headed beast with a sword for his tongue out for a walk today. Had to cut the walk short, though, due to the river of blood that reached up to a horse's bridle.

I've cut off my right hand so they can't put the Mark of the Beast on it! And I'm always ready for a nine-headed dragon with the armoured car I bought off eBay!
