It depends on if you by from a reputable breeder or shelter. Never buy from an irresponsible breeder, and this includes those that breed "designer" dogs. Never buy from a pet store either.

As far as shots and vet bills, that varies by area as well.

You've also got to figure in a high quality food, two of my labs are on a raw diet, and my bel mal puppy is on Innova Evo. It costs me around $120 a month to feed all three.

You've also got expenses for a crate, anywhere from $30-$100 depending on the size of your dog.

Plan to also put away some money each month for those unexpected bills that can pop up from time to time. You never know what could happen, and its best to plan ahead.

I nearly forgot one of the most important things, the cost of having your pet spayed or neutered. Its worth the money, you won't have to worry about the mess of heat cycles, your dog will be much less likely to get certain diseases, and spaying and neutering completely eliminates chances of some, such as uterine or testicular cancer. You don't have to worry about unexpected litters, and you can take comfort in knowing your pet will never add to the overpopulation problem.

It really depends on what kind of dog you get. If you're wanting a purebred with papers, it's going to run into the hundreds of dollars just to purchase the dog. If you're adopting a dog from a shelter, the cost will be much less. Vet bills depend on your location as well. Check with some local vets and see what they charge for office visits, shots, worming, spaying/neutering, flea/tick and heartworm preventative. Those will be the most common vet-related expenses. Obviously, if your dog develops some other health problems, there will be added expense.

What works for me is budgeting a certain amount each month into an account just for pet care and emergencies. It's a horrible feeling to know your pet needs help and not feel like you can afford it.

Depends on the breed and where you get it. Some breeds can cost $2000+, and some can be as little as $200-500 from the classified ads of your local newspaper (just make sure to carefully check out the breeder before you buy). I believe shelter animals are much less expensive (but the costs can add up later if you’re unlucky enough to get one with health problems you didn’t know about).

Early shots and vet bills will run you a few hundred dollars. Spay/neuter will be $100-200 depending on a few factors, like size and which vet you go to.

The cost of food and toys will differ with quality and quantity. You really didn’t give enough information in your question. What kind of dog? Where will you get it? It’s difficult to estimate the cost otherwise, but I’d set aside at least $700, and that’s only if the dog you buy is on the inexpensive side.

Pure breeds will cost you a lot of money but you will have the Pedigree papers that prove your dog is a pure breed.

If you are just looking for a pet they are everywhere. Even some AC papered dogs are nothing but a large genetic pool of diverse genes with many faults that would disqualified if the dog were in competition.

Adopting a dog from humane societies, rescue groups and the sorts have all their shots, have a health certificate and have already been spayed or neutered.

Prices can range form a few hundred to a thousand bucks and more depending on the source you choose.

Before you ever buy a dog you should have either a fenced yard or dog run that your dog can stay in when you want to put it outside. That will cost several hundred to several thousand dollars depending on size. The dog itself can vary in price depending on the breed, the availability in your area, whether you have to ship it. I would say plan to spend at least $500 if you are buying a purebred pet . Vets vary from region to region regarding fees. You should probably set aside at least 300 dollars for neuter/spay and plan on each trip for vaccinations costing at least 50 dollars. Dog food costs will depend on the size of your dog, a toy dog eats very little but a giant breed could go through 50 pounds of dog food a month, the cost of which varies with the quality from 15 to 40 dollars a bag.

first shots: approx $75
shots from then on are about the same as well

collar and leash: $30

flea and tick medicine for 6 months: $100

pretty expensive. a dog alone can cost anywhere from free to thousands of dollars. it all depends on what type of dog you want and where you get it. its always good to go to a local shelter to rescue a dog and then they are cheaper and already fixed.

if you get a puppy they need atleast 4 sets of shots in the beginning. at a vet the shots cost roughly $80-$150 each time. Luvmypet.com goes to local Petco stores and does shots for like $10-$30. shop around. Bansfield in Petsmart usually does free regular vet visits from like 2-4 two days a week.

If you get an older dog, say over 1 year, then vet visits become more like once a year. Plus you need to factor in money to buy food, supplies, toys, etc.

Dogs and puppies definately cost a pretty penny, but if you love them and can take care of them, its definately worth it. :-)

This is Canadian funds...

First buying a dog REALLY varies. If you want to adopt your looking about $200 but if you want a purebred it can be From $500-$2500 depending on the breed.

Vet Bills 8 week needles $70
12 week $70
16 week with rabies $80
Spay/neuter varies from size and sex $150-$300
Then good food monthly $60+
you will need toys/leash/collars/crate/treats
Dog training is a good idea 80 to 200
First year is alot more then the rest. Also this is a rough idea if your dog is healthy with no problems

dogs on petfinder.com come in many breeds, and are reasonably cheap ($100-300). Food is usually about 50 cents to 2 dollars a day. Your basic dog needs, like collars, leads, and small toys all cost about 5 dollars each. I pay about 100 dollars a year for my healthy dog's vet trips and shots. Heartworm meds and flea/tick meds cost an additional 100 dollars, but I don't use either in the winter.

It all depends on the breed you want, if you want a mutt or a purebred. The cost of living in your area, how much your vet charges for the shot and for their office visit. Depends what type of food you want to feed them, what type of flea and heartworm medicine you want to give them. No one can really give you a right answer so many factors play a role in the costs.
