Eric,
I'd like to recommend picking up some car audio magazines so you can learn about the specs and manufactures. Then you'll also have web-site info to check out for even more product info. After you learn some to the lingo..stop by some of the audio stores in your area to see what they sell, you may even go on-line and place an order once you know just what.

I know that some times you may need to mix brands to get the sound that turns your ears on. I've purchased a complete Kenwood Excelon sound system for my Trans Am..2-12" subs w/400watt mono amp.

As the saying goes, "you get what you pay for." Almost all brands have a setup that is in most people's price range. However, there's a difference between cheap and inexpensive. You could get all cheap equipment, but you will end up getting a system that sounds cheap like crackling speakers or "monotonal" speakers. However, you could also get an inexpensive system that sounds half way decent. It could be loud, but what good is loud if all you can hear are the subs and nothing else. Just my $.02

Even if you look into the more well known brands, you can get some inexpensive speakers and amps without sacrificing quality.
Alpine, Rockford Fosgate, MTX all have great equipment for the price.

But if all you want is loud, get stuff like audiobahn, pheonix gold, or pyle. The precision of those subs are just not there, meaning all they do is make loud bass and don't necessarily accurately reproduce sound.

Best is subjective. Personally, I use an Adire Audio Tumult MK2 15d2. Perhaps the lowest distortion sub on the planet, and it's the best for my ears. But BEST? There's no such thing. Reputable companies I'd look into are Ascendant Audio, Dayton Audio, Resonant Engineering (RE audio), don't buy from Adire anymore. Don't purchase any of the garbage best-buy or circuit city brands like Kicker, Audiobahn, Cerwin Vega, Hifonics, etc because they are overpriced and most are poorly designed. JL audio makes a decent sub but it's overpriced. But if you are interested in only making a lot of noise and not about sound quality, hit up your local car stereo shop. Demo every model they have, and you will find something that you like. There's no such thing as the "BEST" subwoofer.

I have 2 Kicker CVR 12's in a sealed box and they hit hard. For the amp, I have an MA audio M1900XE. Bought it all separate, but ive seen dual kicker CVRs with a box and amp for about 250-300 bucks...pretty good if you ask me, but the amp it comes with isnt really all that great. It is still a really good deal!

If you wan't a good deal on some new subwoofers go to ebay. There are some diamond audio D1 series subwoofers you can get for around $60.00-$80.00 each. They are very good for the money they sound great, handle power very well and excellent bass reponse.
I would not do any buisness with best buy if I were you, they only carry low end equipment and usually are seconds.

The ones you find in a pawn shop. Some are mounted in their perspective 'boxes', some aren't. However, you will get the best deal there especially if you haggle with the clerk/owner, etc.

Almost forgot, you'll find an array of different brands there as well, plus the amps to push them.

ive got 2 12" infinity kappa perfect pushed by a rockford fosgate 401s. the amp only puts out 200w per channel but it still sounds great! the subs are 400w RMS and 1400w peak. i seem to get more sound out of mine if they're in a sealed box, just make sure you get the right amout of area behind the subs.

Kicker Comps or Kicker Cvrs sealed. They thump.

for $120 nothing will pound harder then a TC-1000. it has a x-max of 24 mm 1 way. if memory serves me right, the JL 12w7 has a x-mas of 28 mm one way. the w7 is $900. oh, and they love a ported box.
