Depends on the entensity but they are somewhat equal activities if the intensity is the same. If you are doing them and feel like you are working a 6 out of 10 (on how hard you are working) then you are burning the same amount of calories because they are both cardiovascular activities.

IF the resistance on the bike is low and easier for you to do then you are burning less calories.

Your body burns calories just like a car uses gasoline. It takes more gasoline for a car to drive up a hill just like it takes more calories to pedal at a harder resistance than a lighter cycle resistance. The best way is to rate the activity on a scale from 1-10. IF you are working hard then the activities are burning the same amount of calories. IF the activity is not hard for you then you are not burning as many calories. However cardovascular burns the most calories so doing sit ups burns hardly any becuase it is not cardiovascular even if you are trying hard 9 out of 10.

Any excercise that involves using the muscle groups in the legs are the best for burning calories, so find something you will enjoy and be comfortable with, Im not great at running but find that doing a couple of miles every other day burns calories, keeps me fit and gives me a great sense of well being. Walking is also great.

They both burn off about the same amount and focus on the thighs/legs.

Running up and down the stairs is more strenuous, but cycling outside is good for fresh air.

Running up and down stairs, hands down. Especially if you're carrying heavy stuff and doing it all day long.

running up and down the stairs because you are physically doing the movement... you are actually moving yourself without any equipment and plus you use every muscle in your body
