I was just reading the other day about how many males suffer back pain thinking it is their back when in actuality it is their prostate...so maybe he should go have that checked out. Just in case. Better safe than sorry. That said, it could be his back. Is he overweight? That is often the cause of back pain. It could be the sciatic nerve but as you said it doesn't sound like it. If it is muscular (which can be bothersome and last forever) stretching exercises will help immensely. Now, if it is due to a bulging disc (I have that) it may come and go and just be a general bother but I wouldn't advise surgery until it is the last resort.
Has he been checked out at all? The only thing I would be worried about is the prostate thing...
Good luck.

See a chiropractor it may take a few visits before things stay where they belong.

Much pain is from muscles below is an example of what may help (based on headaches).
Begin with a couple swigs of molasses or a couple of bananas daily - magnesium (which regulates many things in the body) and potassium (a needed building block for muscles).
Drink at least 1/2 gallons of water per day. Running a body low on water is like running a car low on oil is the analogy the head of neurology at UCDavis told my husband about 10 years ago.

Now to the cause - muscles - your back, neck shoulders and head have tender spots. They are knots in the fibers of the muscles called trigger points. It makes the muscles tight which makes them press on nerves and other things causing the pain.

The cure - start with a professional massage, you will also want to go back over any place you can get to 6-12 times per session up to 6 times per day rubbing (or lightly scratching on your head) every where that is tender until the knots go away. The place where the skull connects to the spine press up under the edge of the skull (to get to those muscles).

For more information read The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Davies. It teaches what to do and where the pain comes from.

he could have a bulging or herniated disc. it could be pressing against his sciatic nerve. he needs to see a dr. and get an MRI. I have both, and a tear in a disc i already had surgery on once. it is very painful. mine are in my first 3 or 4 vert in my lower back. traction could help him too, look into chiropractors, they will be able to do that.

He should go to an orthopedic doctor who can do x-rays or Mri's to see exactly WHAT the problem is. It could be a number of things!!!!!!!!! I had to have my lumber fused (lower back) in 2005 due to severe scoliosis........which in turn led to other problems bc i had a 45 degree curve in my spine, after surgery i lost 2 inches in height.....blah,blah, blah, started PT then left hip starts to hurt, right knee blew up. Had to have day surgery on knee in Nov. 2006 and just had a TOTAL HIP REPLACEMEN T on Jan. 11, about 5 weeks ago!!! GET him to an ortho dr. ASAP or it will get worse, trust me ...i KNOW........................................

Sounds like a strain. My chiropractor would advise ice on it. He should probably see one. If the bones are out of alignment, this could cause problems too.
