I have an 11yr old female Maine Coon, recently 10/18/06 I lost my other cat to cancer. Now this one she smells of urine which she has a lot of fur yes but it's not like her to smell so badly. I'm concerned because I know smell like this can be a sign of a serious health problem and I also know it's not uncommon when you have had 2 animals who've been together for so long if one dies for the other one to shortly follow. I'm calling her vet tomorrow, but I want to try to get an idea of what to expect.
She smells of cat urine real strong,
she purrs more then usual,
she normally hides under the bed and is little miss independant and she's not been doing that she's been out in the open and been staying closer to me then she used to. This has all been going on since the loss of her brother.

Your Cat is in a severe depression. Not unusual, but it should not be going on this long (4mths). She may have indeed gotten herself sick. Could be a urinary infection. Has her eating habbits Changed

All of the other behavior except the urine smell sounds normal for a cat that lost its companion. A trip to the vet is on order to find out whether she has a health problem or is not grooming herself properly.

Hanging around with you is probably just because she misses the other cat, the purring could be part of that also. She could also be neglecting herself which would increase an odor. I would think she's probably okay. If there is a physical problem it's not necessarily due to her loss, she is getting older, but if there is one it's better that you're getting her checked now.
Good luck, I hope everything turns out for you both.

Animals can become quite attached/bonded to another animal. She has lost her companion and can be in a depressed state. She knows something is amiss (other cat is gone) and could be coming out seeking reassurance from her momma (you).

Contrary to most folks belief - purring is NOT always a sign of contentment. Cats purr when stressed or ill also.

I agree with you on taking your cat in for a checkup.

I hope everything turns out just fine. Also my heart goes out to you on the loss of your other cat.

She probably smells like urine because maybe there is something wrong with her immune system, feed her iams immune system health. and take her to the vet, your cat may have depression. Give her LOTS of attention. you should REALLY take her to the vet soon. it is not an emergency but there could be something wrong with your cat's bladder. The depression could be caused by the death of her brother. Or she could not have depression. you don't know, that is why you have to take your cat to the vet soon. Best of luck.

I don't know what might be wrong with your cat, but you're doing the right thing by taking her to the vet. She's probably been paying more attention to you because her brother is gone and she thinks she might lose you, too.
Good luck and I hope your cats okay!

My heart goes out to you! I've had my cat, Buggie, for nearly 11 years now. I am sure the vet will give you a definate answer, but maybe it's just physical, like a urinary tract infection or something. I do feel cats experience grief. But, yours is purring and coming out, that doesn't sound like sadness to me. Best of luck!! I will pray for your cat. :)

i dont know about the smell, but as for the purring and such, shes probably getting a little lonely. i know i would if my brother died.

so yeah, take her to the vet to see whats wrong. the purring and staying close to you isnt really a problem, she just wants more attention now. (i can see why)

good luck!

she's sad and lonely which is why she is probably avoiding the use of the litter box which still has her brother's scent. i would maybe consider getting another cat so that way she could feel less lonely and start getting back to normal
