Well, it can be the virus that causes rubella, measles, western equine encephalitis ( western USA and Canada ) eastern equine encephalitis ( eastern USA ), herpes simplex virus type 1, and some others. The scientific name is usually that, unless you want to mention the structure of the virus

Many different viruses cause encephalitis. That caused by Japanese B virus is particularly dangerous. Herpes simplex encephalitis affects one lobe, usually the temporal lobe of the brain. ECHO, Coxsackie, equine viruses, West Nile virus, measles, mumps, influenza, rubella, chicken pox; all these viruses can cause encephalitis.

I got identified with herpes (type 2) about three years back, whilst I was still in college and had a silly one-night stand. You are being too general. There really are hundreds of viruses which can cause viral encephalitis

Encephalitis is an acute brain inflammation. Many different virii cause it.
One that was discovered in 1999 was the Nipah virus.
