removing engagement and budget from the equasion, the most important c is clarity. a flawless (or almost flawless) diamond will hold or increase its value better. it is a higher quality jewel.

that being said, your fiancee will not know if its flawed or not. she will probably want Carat , a big one.

i defer to the expert below. if he says cut, he should know.

My opinion is that clarity is the most important. I have seen some ugly diamonds only because they were yellowish. The cut helps the "sparkle" aspect, but to the naked eye is not very detectable. The caret is size, and the bigger it is the more it will show it's imperfections.
When I chose my ring, I chose a modest size, with a simple cut that is high in clarity. When it is cleaned up nice, it glistens! I love it.

Now keep in mind, most of this is opinion. Some girls feel the bigger the better, or have always dreamed of a specific cut, (heart, pear, square, marque, etc.). Try to do a little homework on your girl, or ask someone close to her that she may have daydreamed with about this type of thing, (mother, sister, or best friend).

One other bit of advise, don't buy at the first store you go to. Go to several stores and let them teach you about the rings. You don't want to be influenced by the opinion of the first sales person you meet. Some are pushy, so don't let them sell you something your not sure of. If it's the right one and a good deal, they know you'll be back.

Best wishes for a long and happy life together!

I think color AND clarity are equally important. I think together they really make the quality of the diamond. Nothing is worse than a diamond that is yellowish and cloudy looking. I had a friend with a BIG diamond ring that was all yellow and cloudy. I would much rather go with something a little smaller with good color and clarity. So, if you are going to sacrifice anything, honestly? It should be carat. Quality not quantity!!!

I am certified through the Diamond Counsel of America. The most important and yet least discussed about a diamond is the CUT. 60% of the cost has to do with the cut which affects the brilliance of the diamond. As for the other 3 -c"s, I think that the carat weight can be smaller,in order to get quality.

The most important is cut. Second would be color and clarity. If you need to sacrafice on one C I would select carat size. A well cut diamod that is nearly colorless and has a high clarity grading will always be more impressive and beautiful than a larger stone of less quality.

"The cut is considered the most important characteristic of a diamond, because a well proportioned stone, regardless of it shape, offers the greatest fire, sparkle, and brilliance. "

they are all equally important. That being said the bigger the diamond (carat), the more important it is to have better color, cut, and clarity. If a diamond is smaller, you dont notice color, cut and clarity as much.

If youre getting anything near 1carat, dont sacrafice any of the other C's. And remember, the diamond always looks better and more sparkley in a jewelry store because of the light they use.

Wow, good question. I'd say carat & color should be important. You can sacrifice the cut. For my ring, I thought I'd love to have the cushion cut. Well, it's not common so it cost my fiance an extra thousand to get the cut I want. In the end, not many people notice it anyway. I regret not getting the "usual" round brilliant cut as it gave the best light. Good luck! Hint... you should ask your fiance as she will be the one wearing it! Congrats!

Most important "C" - Commitment! If the two of you are truly in love, the ring doesn't matter.

Do not sacrifice color or carat...you can probably sacrifice the clarity if you are on a budget

Clarity. Just because a diamond is "bigger" does not mean it's better by any means.
