Why can't ants just have holes without the hills? What is the purpose of haveinf a hill on the hole?

Probably to make water run off when it rains rather than pool into a flat hole.

For the very simple reason that when you dig a hole the spoil has to go somewhere.

The heap is also a loose air filled structure so the earth takes up a much greater space.

The dirt where the hole is had to go somewhere, they just threw it on top and made a hill.
