Animals use that form of activity to establish dominance over one another. You will notice when you study animal groups, that one particular member will be the only one that initiates that activity and is NEVER on the receiving end of things, as it were. You will also notice that it is generally only the males that engage in thses activities, rarely if ever females, for obvious reasons. That is how such things are used in the animal kingdom. Since, according to biologist and zoologists animals do not have the sensations of pleasure and humans have (not even apes or monkeys have that) the experience is solely for the purpose of showing who is boss, nothing more, nothing less.

And why do they insist on trying to mate with inanimate objects? I think it's natural instinct gone wrong. Maybe they get so desperate to ensure the survival of their species, they'll hump anything in the vain hope that SOMETHING has to bear children? :/

Humans and dolphins are the only beings who have sex for pleasure, so I guess the dog doesn't get friendly with his owner's leg for the fun of it.
