Its means 5 stereo speakers and 1 sub woofer. But my advice to u. First u goes to music system shops and feels the effects of 2.1, 4.1, 5.1 and 7.1 channel woofer surround speakers. In market today u have many options ant there is many good and rewound company .

Stereo=left right
2.1=left right plus subwoofer
3.1=left right subwoofer plus center
5.1=left right subwoofer center and left/right surround
6.1=left right subwoofer center left/right surround and rear
7.1=left right subwoofer center left/right surround rear and left/ right rear surround
In order to take full advantage you need a amplifier/reciever capable of decoding as well as the proper connecting cable, either HDMI or digital coax. Just using an RCA or phono plug will get sound but it is simulated surround and doesn't offer the true channel separation.
